How to Avoid Overspending on Black Friday

Black Friday is November 25, 2016!  For many people this is an exciting time filled with joy and the excitement of finding the best deals on TVs, phones, games and other Christmas Gift ideas.  For others, especially the husbands and wives and “free spirited” shopoholics, Black Friday can be a very stressful day filled with dissagreements about money and how much to spend on particular Christmas gifts.

If you (or your spouse) fall in this later category, here’s a few tips to help you both come out ahead during Black Friday and the rest of the 2016 holiday shopping season.

Communicate with your partner on how much you actually plan to spend during your Black Friday shopping trip including details on how and when you plan to pay for the items you’re planning on purchasing.  Will the purchases be going on a credit card?  What is the current account balances on the card?

While many experts agree that you don’t really need to go shopping on Black Friday to get the best deals, you need to make sure you plan out your best route to the various retailers in your area.  What time do the stores open?  Are the best Black Friday deals only available during certain hours (2:00AM to 3:00AM for example).  Do you really need to purchase the items on your Black Friday shopping list?  While it is true you can often get a great deal on Black Friday, its also true that retailers unload a lot of unpopular items the otherwise couldn’t sell.

Pay Attention to Model #’s:

Another sneaky Black Friday trick retailers use is to mislead consumers is to offer inferior quality products with slight variations in their model #’s to mislead consumers into getting a good deal when they really aren’t.  For example, Best Buy offers at least 4 different models of 60″ high definition 4k HD TVs ranging in price from $579 to over $2500.  Make sure you do your research and you’re buying something that actually fits your needs.
